What you get

A searchable API reference and portable request pack

What you can make

  • Turn an OpenAPI 3.0 JSON contract into a searchable endpoint reference.
  • Switch response examples and inspect cURL, Python and Fetch requests.
  • Export a Postman collection and check captured responses against the supported schema subset.

Good fit

API teams publishing a portable reference from an explicit supplied contract.

Know the limits

Supports a documented OpenAPI subset; missing examples remain explicitly missing.

About this skill

Capabilities: up to fifty operations, scalar path/query/header parameters, local schema references, simple bearer or header-key auth, response/status switching, endpoint search and cURL/Python/Fetch request views. Missing examples stay explicitly missing.

Deliverables: offline index.html, original openapi.json, reference.md, importable postman.json with an empty token variable, three snippet files per operation, quality.json and a SHA-256 manifest. The fictional Northstar contract includes seven documented operations.

Read the full workflow

First run: Python 3.10+ standard library only. Run scripts/build-docs.py --spec examples/openapi.json --demo --output ./api-reference. Use scripts/check-response.py with a declared operation/status and a captured JSON-object response to perform a separate local shape check.

Checks: required fields, types, enum, nullable, additional properties, size/numeric bounds and unique array items. JSON numbers compare numerically while booleans remain distinct. Unknown semantic keywords, unsupported serialization and server overrides fail explicitly.

Validation: seven operation exports generated, reusable schemas resolved, good/bad captured response fixtures checked, null bodies preserved, request quoting and Markdown fences inspected. Search, response switching, language selection, matching snippet-file downloads and actual Postman downloads were exercised.

Limits: OpenAPI 3.0 JSON and a deliberately bounded schema subset; YAML, OpenAPI 3.1, formats, compositions, regex and recursive schemas require explicit conversion or separate tooling. Generated references never execute requests. Contract shape checks do not verify server behavior, permissions or authentication.

Version 1.0.1: original Skillrove tools and examples under MIT, informed by an MIT-licensed API-documentation workflow with its notice and pinned attribution included. $4.99 one-time; active Premium memberships cover this package.

    Choose your agent

These steps use a project folder. Open the project in your agent and run terminal commands from its root.

    Codex directory guide

    Package folder .agents/skills/api-docs-studio

    Add the package

Download and unzip the package into the folder above. Keep all its files together, with SKILL.md directly inside that folder.

Downloads require a verified account and purchase access. Choose a new folder if this Skill is already installed.

    Run the included sample

Manual sample commands and technical details

Read SKILL.md, review the generator and check its runtime requirements before running:

    cd .agents/skills/api-docs-studio
    python3 scripts/build-docs.py --spec examples/openapi.json --demo --output ./api-reference
    Your first result

Search endpoints, select an operation, switch cURL/Python/Fetch and inspect documented response statuses. Download Postman and reconcile all seven requests with the original contract. Run check-response.py --spec examples/openapi.json --operation getWorkspace --status 200 --response examples/workspace-response.json; then remove a required field and confirm rejection.

Python 3.10+ standard library, offline. OpenAPI 3.0 JSON with local acyclic references and the documented schema subset. The response checker accepts JSON object bodies. Requests are never executed; tokens stay blank or use environment placeholders. Server behavior, authentication and unsupported schema semantics require separate tests.

If api-reference already exists, change the output to ./api-reference-2. Existing files are never overwritten.

    Prefer to ask your agent?

Use API Docs Studio at .agents/skills/api-docs-studio. Read SKILL.md and review scripts/build-docs.py. Run examples/openapi.json into a new output folder and show me all generated files. Keep fictional sample content clearly labeled.

Ready to use your own facts?

Copy examples/openapi.json to a new input file, replace all fictional facts, and generate into a new folder. Review the content before using or publishing it; the generator does not independently verify claims.
